Bethany Walker is Co-Director of and Research Professor at the Annemarie Schimmel Kolleg and Director of the Islamic Archaeology Research Unit at the University of Bonn.
Walker is a historically trained archaeologist, directs and co-directs three long-term field projects in the Levant, and actively consults on Crusader and Islamic ceramics at eastern Mediterranean sites. She is the founding editor of the Journal of Islamic Archaeology and serves on numerous American and French editorial boards, as well as the Board of Directors of the American Center of Oriental Research in Amman, Jordan. Walker’s current research centers on rural society and migration in the Mamluk period, environmental and agricultural history, indigenous peasant knowledge in the Middle and Late Islamic periods, and frontier studies, topics on which she published extensively in monograph and article form.
