How we want to do things?
Our form of teaching is the webinar. It is basically a seminar, but instead of a classroom it is based on an internet conference platform (Adobe Connect) provided by the host institution. Professors and up to 25 students can interact with each other. A number of 12 to 15 students is ideal. The technology enables one to project a scan of a document or a three dimensional object under discussion or a presentation for every participant to see; a white board is on hand to explain matters visually and much more. The students require only a run-of-the-mill computer, a broad band connection, and a headset. No software application has to be installed by the students. Further, all webinars require an adequate level of spoken and written proficiency in the English language.
The curriculum consists of four classes. These four classes are not consecutive. Enrollment may be every term. Each of the four courses will be offered at least once every four terms. After taking all four courses, the student will graduate with a certificate in Islamic Material Culture, certified by all four participating institutions. Single courses can be taken as well, depending on the availability of study places in the program. Taking part in these courses will be accredited by all participating institutions. The professors and the board of the “Program in Islamic Material Culture” will assist in the accreditation at the home universities of the students, but cannot guarantee this. At the same time, the classes are also integrated into the regular curriculum at the respective programs of the participating universities.
