Eastern Coins in the Early Modern World - Antiquarianism and the Oriental Artefact 1500-1800Conference in Trujillo, Spain (Sept. 26-29, 2017)
8 August 2017
The conference "Eastern Coins in the Early Modern World - Antiquarianism and the Oriental Artefact 1500-1800" will take place in Trujillo, Spain from September 26-29, 2017 and is organized by Stefan Heidemann (Universität Hamburg) and Martin Mulsow (Universität Erfurt/ Gotha). It is part of the "Spanish-German Academic Conversations" (Spanisch-Deutsche Arbeitsgespräche) that are the result of a joint initiative of the Fundación Xavier de Salas (Trujillo), the Herzog August Bibliothek (Wolfenbüttel) and the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz.
Based on recent scholarship on early modern antiquarianism and the genesis of Oriental philologies in the 17th century, the organisers and participants of this conference intend to contribute new insights into the rise of antiquarianism with respect to Oriental objects and to consider the different scholarly attitudes towards the material culture of the Orient and vice versa. Thus, the conference also brings numismatists and historians of numismatics and historians of intellectual history and antiquarianism together and allows for a interdisciplinary discussion.
